In a first, the Election Commission of India (ECI) had announced handing out voter’s guides to citizens at their doorsteps.
While inaccurate electoral rolls have largely been blamed for the poor voter turnout in Bengaluru on Saturday, the apathy of election authorities in reaching out and responding to voters too is seen as a factor that has contributed to the fall. Many voters have given up after making efforts to enrol themselves because the process is not as easy as enrolling for Aadhaar.
The Bangaluru Urban District has spent about ?1.4 crore on Systematic Voter Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) activities in the 28 assembly segments to raise awareness among voters about the election process. Though the money has gone into printing voter guide books and planning activities to create voter awareness, nothing much really happened on the ground.
